Focus Sessions

For PhDs who do great science but struggle to get things done on time.

You know you're capable of brilliant work. The problem isn't your research - it's getting from idea to finished chapter, from analysis to submitted paper, from 'nearly done' to actually done…

Woman sitting on her laptop, working. Hands on keyboard. She is focusing on her work. Focused. Concentration. Deep Work. Getting things done.

It’s 10 PM - again! You’re still β€˜almost done’ with that chapter you started three weeks ago, wondering why smart minds like yours can’t just… finish things!

Your online co-working space where scattered PhD brains become laser focused

You'll work alongside other researchers who share the same frustrations and wins like you.
In timed sessions designed to cut through procrastination and analysis paralysis, you will feel the contagious and uplifting power of joint focus. Whether you're wrestling with that methodology chapter, drowning in data analysis, or staring at a blank page that's supposed to become your literature review - this is where you stop spinning your wheels and start making real progress.

And here's the thing: learning to focus isn't just about getting through your PhD. It's about rewiring your brain for the kind of deep, sustained work that will support you throughout your entire career.

WORK YOUR WAY

What you will achieve through joining my Focus Sessions

Stop procrastination!

You know what you want to work on, but somehow you find yourself reorganising your desk, checking emails, or falling down research rabbit holes instead.
Here's what changes that: working alongside other researchers who've committed to the same focused time block as you. When everyone around you is heads-down working, procrastination becomes much harder.
Add clear start/stop times, declared intentions, and regular breaks, and suddenly you're the person who actually gets things done instead of just thinking about getting things done.

Stop doubting yourself!

That voice telling you everyone else has it figured out while you're still struggling?
It gets quieter when you start finishing what you begin. Each completed session where you push through resistance builds proof that you can handle whatever your research throws at you.
You'll stop comparing your behind-the-scenes to everyone else's LinkedIn success and develop the quiet confidence that comes from knowing you can tackle any complex challenge.

Stop waiting for motivation!

One-line drawing brain. Brain as symbol for focus, concentration, clear thoughts - all benefits achieved by joining Focus Sessions

Your academic success depends on your ability to think clearly and transform ideas into compelling work - whether you feel like it or not.
Through these sessions, you'll develop the skill of dropping into deep focus whenever you choose. No more waiting for inspiration to strike or the perfect mood to hit.
You'll train your brain to respond when you call on it, turning focus from something that happens to you into something you control.

200+ hours of focused PhD work achieved so far. Are you in for the next month?

How does it feel to be in a Focus Session?

I β€˜recorded’ a Mini-Focus Session for you and turned it into a podcast episode.

Have a listen & get a hands-on experience of what Focus Sessions are like.

The Focus Session is 3 x 25 minutes = 1.5 hours.

Happy Focus!

Meet your host and guide, Miriam

I'll never forget my first PhD writing course in a remote hotel in the Danish countrysideβ€”silent focus sessions where the only sounds were keyboards and the crisp air filled with ideas. That atmosphere of pure concentration left a lasting impression on me.

Having navigated the PhD journey myself (double PhD from Ghent and Copenhagen University), I know firsthand how challenging it can be to maintain focus amidst all the academic pressures.

I've recreated that Danish countryside essence with my Focus Sessions, offering a supportive space for focused, distraction-free productivity. In our online sessions, we share accountability, hold space for each other and achieve what truly matters.

Join me and discover what happens when scattered researchers come together to focus.

Can't wait to meet you!

Do you have questions?

Below you find answers to common questions. Not what you are looking for? Feel free to contact me and ask me directly.

Target Group

  • While I designed these for PhDs (having been through it myself), anyone doing knowledge work behind a computer will benefit. Postdocs, researchers, writers - if you think and create for work, you're welcome.

  • Absolutely! You can join no matter what you're working on. We have people working on their statistics, their figures, their presentation slides, grant applications, or social media posts. The only requirement is that you sit behind your computer and do 'knowledge work'. So, if you're working in the lab for instance, I'd advise you to join another time :)

  • We have people at every stage - some haven't started their thesis, others are deep in writing, and some (like me) are already done. This isn't about comparing yourself with others - it's about collective focus that benefits everyone.

  • The sessions are casual and supportive, but the focus is on focused work time - no networking (introvert friendly ,), just productive time together.

  • I highly encourage cameras on - it creates community and accountability that helps everyone stay focused. But I won't force you. The choice is yours.

  • Getting stuck happens to everyone! I'll give you simple strategies to get unstuck, and you can always step away for a bit if needed. The sessions support you, not stress you out. And if this is a persisting issue for you, I'd invite you to join the next round of my Time Mastery course where we go deeply into managing to-dos and focus.

  • Shouldn't be an issue! While I encourage you to keep your cameras on throughout, I'll never ask you to share your screen! And while at the beginning we all share what we'll be working on, we don't go into details. You share as much as you feel comfortable sharing. You could for example simply say 'I'm working on my data' - and that's good enough :) As long as YOU know what it really is you're working on and as long as you have clarity about your next steps :)

  • Life happens! If you get distracted or need to leave early, that's totally fine. I'll give you strategies to minimise distractions, but the sessions are flexible and supportive. Focus sessions are here to support you, not to imprison you!

During Sessions

  • We meet at least three times per week, 3 hours each session. That's up to 9 hours of focused work time available to you weekly.

  • Life happens! While consistency helps, you're not locked into every single session. Join when you can, and you'll still benefit from the accountability and structure. You have 2 options to participate in the focus sessions - one is the subscription with unlimited access, the other is a 10-session card access. You can see for yourself which option suits your circumstances better and what makes most sense for you.

  • Sessions are hosted on Zoom. You'll receive easy-to-follow calendar invites with the Zoom link included.

  • Yes, in principle you can join from anywhere. However, keep in mind that I'm in CET / Copenhagen, Berlin, Paris, Rome time. So unless you live in Europe, parts of Africa or western Asia it might be impractical for you to join. We meet mornings and afternoons. If you live in another timezone, please make sure it still makes sense for you! No Deep Work at 3 AM! :D

  • Here is what you can do: let your colleagues know you're in focused work mode, book a quiet room, or work from home. A simple 'Do not disturb - in focused work session until 12pm' sign works wonders.

Framework

The Cost of Staying Scattered

Here's what happens when brilliant PhDs keep "figuring it out later":

That chapter you've been "almost done" with for three months? Still sitting there. The paper deadline approaches while you cycle through the same productivity apps and techniques that haven't worked yet. You watch colleagues finish their work and wonder what's wrong with you.

But here's the harsh reality many PhDs face: scattered work patterns don't magically fix themselves. Without structure and accountability, that brilliant research stays trapped in your head. Months stretch into years. Your contract ends, but your thesis doesn't. Now you're finishing unpaid, squeezing writing into nights and weekends around your new job, watching your research grow stale while your confidence erodes. The work you once felt passionate about becomes no more than a burden. You started excited, now you just want to get it over with. NO!

The PhD who learns to focus finishes on time, with energy left for what comes next. The one who stays scattered? They're still writing three years later, wondering where their career went.
