Time Management for PhDs

Struggling to stay on top of your PhD workload? Do you want to enhance your productivity and time management skills? Are you seeking to finish your PhD on time without burnout or working ‘guilty’ weekends?

Then this is the right course for you! Managing your time effectively to make consistent progress is an essential skill for PhD students and early career researchers.

This course helps you develop this skill in the academic context through:

  • mastering time management fundamentals

  • learning core principles and best practices for sustainable productivity

  • practising usage of fundamental planning tools and techniques such as priority setting and energy management

  • leveraging focus strategies commonly used by successful researchers, like deep work sessions, strategic breaks and reflection practices

  • developing, evaluating and applying personalised time management systems for your research through hands-on exercises, peer accountability sessions and progress reviews.

After completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Design weekly plans and daily routines for consistent progress

  • Utilise time management techniques common to successful researchers, such as deep work, time blocking, energy management, etc.

  • Manage tasks and priorities stored in your planning system, demonstrating skills such as breaking down projects, setting realistic goals, and tracking progress

  • Apply reflection practices to your work for continuous improvement with a easy-to-follow review workflow (daily check-ins, weekly reviews, and monthly planning)

  • Plan and execute focused work sessions using structured techniques and accountability systems

  • Communicate boundaries effectively both verbally and in writing, via calendar blocks, out-of-office messages, and clear expectations

  • Critically analyse your work patterns for sustainable practices such as regular breaks, realistic planning, adherence to your energy rhythms, etc.

After this course, your institution will have gained:

  • A researcher with time management and productivity skills that can accelerate their path to completion (i.e. finish on time)

  • A PhD student who knows how to make consistent, meaningful progress without burnout or extra hours

  • More knowledge within the research group regarding sustainable work practices and effective time management

Practicalities

  • Admission to the course requires a PhD candidacy (from second year onwards) or a postdoctoral position.

The course is designed for researchers who:

    • Manage long-term research projects with high levels of autonomy

    • Structure their own time and priorities with limited external oversight

    • Work independently on complex tasks requiring sustained focus

    • Balance multiple responsibilities (research, writing, teaching, collaboration)

    • Participants may come from academia, industry research roles, or other research-intensive positions where self-directed time management is essential.

Since the programme is taught in English, you must have proficient English skills.

  • You will need a PC with a stable internet connection to follow this online course.

  • The course is divided into 6 modules, one per week. Each module includes a combination of live online teaching, reflection exercises, worksheets and reading material depending on the module. The online lessons are recorded and available shortly after the live session, allowing for flexible studying conditions.

Furthermore, you are offered weekly online co-working sessions to practice the techniques in real-time for 2 months following and alongside the course.

  • Live workshops:

Voices of former participants

“Previously, I have only had time management presented as “make a schedule and follow that”. This was a lot more helpful if you are an actual human. You presented a much broader and more holistic understanding of time management and offered flexible tools that I have found to be useful and supportive. I now, more than before, believe I can be my own ally rather than enemy, when it comes to managing my time.”

— Elisabeth
PhD at the University of Copenhagen

Useful and supportive.

“I want to thank you for your highly-valued help, advice and support. Your work with providing tools, systems and perspectives for time and focus management has been very helpful, and I really appreciate the way that you approach this work and the different needs of us as PhD / early career researchers. I am very happy that I joined the Time Mastery course.”

— Lotte
PhD at Roskilde University

I am very happy that I joined the Time Mastery course.

— Gülin
PhD at the Technical University of Denmark

The course absolutely met my expectations.

Before working together, I was really struggling with structuring my work days and getting things done without wasting far too much time.

Now, time management is becoming much more manageable!

The course absolutely met my expectations, and I loved the conversational, discussion-based approach rather than being talked at.
